Miami Beach Pride takes place in April, with a weekend festival and a parade that runs the length of Ocean Drive. The route is the point: the Atlantic and Lummus Park on one side, the deco façades on the other, which is a setting no other major Pride can offer.
Recent editions have drawn crowds well into six figures across the weekend. The parade itself is free to watch.
South Beach has been one of the most significant gay destinations in the Americas since the 1980s, and that is not incidental to the neighbourhood's history. The preservation-era revival of these blocks, when the district was cheap, unfashionable and half-empty, was substantially driven by a gay community that moved in and restored buildings nobody else wanted. Pride on Ocean Drive is a parade through the result of that.
The 12th Street beach has been the long-standing gay beach on this island for decades, and its lifeguard tower is painted in rainbow colours year round.
Ocean Drive closes to vehicles for the parade, and surrounding streets carry restrictions through the weekend. Park in a municipal garage well away from the route, or use the free Miami Beach Trolley.
Accommodation on the island is at its tightest for the year across this weekend, alongside Art Basel in December and Winter Party in early March. Book months rather than weeks ahead.
April is the best month on this island regardless of the festival: water warming into the high seventies, dry air, long evenings and the winter crowds gone. If you cannot get a room for the Pride weekend itself, the surrounding weeks are excellent and considerably cheaper.
